We offer a range of caravan towing courses designed to help both beginners and experienced caravanners. If you are new to caravanning, we recommend our Introduction to Caravanning Course. This 1-day course will provide you with everything you need to start your caravan adventures. For those more experienced towers who are looking to improve their skills, we recommend our 3-hr manoeuvring course. In a short time we can show you how to master your reversing skills or overcome any individual problems you've encountered.
No prior experience is necessary! Our courses are suitable for complete beginners who are new to towing as well as those with some experience looking to improve their skills. You just need a vehicle with a tow bar!
Our Introduction to Caravanning Course is a 1-day course (approx. 5 hrs) for up to two people. Our Caravan Manoeuvring Course is half a day (approx. 3 hrs) for one person.
You’ll learn how to safely hitch and unhitch a caravan, load and nose weight a caravan for safe and stable towing, perform reversing and manoeuvring techniques for use on the highway and on a campsite, understand the basics of towing safety, and get practical experience on the road with a trained instructor.
The licence entitlement that permits a driver to tow a caravan or trailer over 750 kg is called B+E. The ‘B’ is the standard car licence, and the ‘E’ relates to towing a trailer.
If you passed your test before 19 January 2013, the B+E entitlement allows you to tow any trailer behind a vehicle weighing up to 3,500kg (Maximum Authorised Mass), provided the weight of the trailer does not exceed the vehicle’s towing capacity. And just to confuse you further, if you passed your test before 1 January 1997, you were not required to take a test and were gifted the ‘E’ category. This is also known as Grandfather rights.
If you passed on or after 19 January 2013, then you can tow a trailer with a Maximum Authorised Mass of up to 3,500kg, so long as this does not exceed the capacity of the towing vehicle.
Since 16 December 2021, the requirement to take a towing test has been withdrawn, meaning you can tow a trailer with a MAM of 3500 kg, so long as this does not exceed the towing capacity of the vehicle. Even so, we would strongly recommend seeking instruction before towing a caravan or trailer for the first time!
